KULAMBO BULLETTING is a re-enactment of the mosquito press—underground publishers distributing vital information about injustice under Ferdinand Marcos (who imposed martial law on the Philippines between 1972-1986) despite his efforts to suppress free speech—and its parallels to the humanitarian crisis under then President Rodrigo Duterte. The name of the publication refers to the word "kulambo," which means "mosquito net" in Tagalog (a reference to autocrats that shield themselves away from dissent, and Duterte, who is known to sleep inside one at night).
The publication includes commissioned texts and presentations about the Philippines today, rare reprints of select mosquito press publications, a crash course in jejemon (a queer-coded slang popular in the Philippines), and even recipes. Print edition of 25, and a PDF and Tumblr site with expanded archival material.
KULAMBO BULLETING is a Hardworking Goodlooking project and publication (w/ Clara Balaguer, Kristian Henson, and Czar Kristoff) and was also part of ULISES's Publishing as Practice Program, featured in this accompanying catalogue.
